Determination of low molecular weight compounds (monomers, additives, etc.) from polymeric materials and scalping of flavours from food matrices

The migration of phthalates and other low molecular weight compounds from consumer products may endanger human health through direct exposure and, indirectly, through their leaching into other products or in the environment. Furthermore, the release of polymerisation residues (e.g. monomers, oligomers, solvents), additives (e.g. plasticisers, colorants, UV-stabilisers, antioxidants) and printing inks from polymer packaging materials to food may affect its safety by cross-contamination effects. Likewise, the absorption, or scalping, of aromas and flavors originally contained in food products by the packaging to the outside environment may cause an eventual loss of quality of the packaged food product and changes of polymer barrier and/or mechanical properties. To this purpose, in the last years IPCB has developed experience in the analysis and monitoring of plasticizers and other low molecular weight compounds from polymeric materials.

The exposition and the retention/bioaccumulation of PVC plasticizers (phthalates and trimellitates) in dialyzed patients and the migration of other plasticizers (DOA, DINCH and DEHT) from medical devices were determined by quantitative HPLC and GC-MS standardized methods. The determination of aromas scalped from food-packaging, by standardized quantitative HPLC and GC-MS methods, was performed on packaging film samples in contact with simulating liquids, water enriched with aroma compounds, ethyl butyrate and ethyl hexanoate. Furthermore, the substances scalped from simulating liquid or fruit purees and trapped in the polymer matrix of the packaging were identified by Py-GC/MS.
